And just an update to this issue.

I created a new shared library (linked in addition to the old one I 
referenced in the previous message) with a similar structure, etc.  The 
new shared library works just fine.

So the issue isn't the structure (unless someone chimes in and tells me 
I am being foolhardy with memory/pointers) but something else clobbering 
klone, perhaps, when I try to access it?
